New SAGE Girls Blog Goes Live!

Merritt Johnston
We have lift-off! After months of praying and planning, the new SAGE site is live along with this little blog here. While it may be small now, we are hoping it will become big time soon with your help. We know there are girls out there who have stories to tell, thoughts to share, questions to ask, and overall a passion to do so through the written word. If that describes you, then we'd love to have your help with this blog. Some of us on the SAGE team will definitely be chiming in from time to time, but we'd love to also have this blog be a ...

Abercrombie's Appeal Fades

Merritt Johnston
As someone who has dealt with the frustrations of this retailer's salacious advertising strategy for years, I am intrigued to find that it may be the economy more than the demand for modesty that brings them down. With everyone hard pressed financially, even teens are realizing that paying outrageous clothing prices may need to be a thing of the past. Q&A: Why do you think A&F has been so successful in the past? Q&A: Have you noticed your girls making more cost-effective choices for their clothing? Q&A: What impact do you think the ...

Rihanna Embodies the Typical Teen

Merritt Johnston
The media has inundated us with information about the recent incident between pop superstars Chris Brown and Rihanna. While there is debate from all sides, it is clear that Rihanna has no intention of ending the relationship at the present time. While I wish that I could be shocked by this choice, I believe it embodies the course of action that the typical teen girl takes today. With some statistics finding that as many as 1 in 4 teen relationships is abusive, how can we be surprised that even celebrities are proving the validity of the ...

Teen Girls Targeted at Work

Merritt Johnston
While we have spent the last few years educating and warning girls about the dangers of online predators, it appears an even greater adversary has been lurking much closer than cyberspace. PBS revealed personal testimonies of girls assaulted at their workplace in their feature, "Is Your Daughter Safe at Work?" Some estimates say as many as 200,000 teens experience an assault at their workplaces each year. Q&A: Do you believe companies should implement greater security measures? Q&A: How should we educate girls about these dangers?

My Chemical Romance: Girls' Infatuation with Harmful Makeup

Merritt Johnston
Research suggests that many of today's personal care products may have harmful effects on their users. In an effort to "look their best," girls are using on average a staggering 17 personal care products each day. Studies link the chemicals in many of these products  to potential health effects including cancer and hormone disruption. Since most girls are uneducated and indiscriminate in their shopping choices, I would guess that few are aware of the damaging ingredients often included in the products they use. Q&A: Do you think girls ...

Pro-Anorexia Groups Grow Online

Merritt Johnston
In spite of the devastating health consequences resulting from eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia, young women continue to support anorexic behavior in order to lose weight quickly. A recent article in Newsweek magazine uncovers the rise of "pro-ana" groups on social networking sites like Facebook. In the article, Stanford professor Rebecka Peebles, M.D. cites a 2006 study that she cowrote which found "that 96 percent of teens diagnosed with eating disorders who visited pro-eating disorder Web sites learned new dieting and purging ...

Teen Pregnancies on the Rise in 26 States

Merritt Johnston
USA Today ran an article this week with statistics revealing that teen pregnancies are on the rise in 26 states. A portion of the article reads as follows: "To see 26 states with statistically significant increases is fairly remarkable," says Paul Sutton, a demographer with the National Center for Health Statistics, which released the data Wednesday. "We're seeing increases in both the number of teens having births and also the rate at which they are having births. Both of them are going up." This is certainly a devastating trend for ...
